COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is General Biology II (Majors Plants).  Emphasis will be on the anatomy, morphology, physiology, ecology, and evolution of plants.  It is the second course of the general biology sequence for biology (and related) majors, General Biology III (Majors Animals) is offered spring quarter.

PREREQUISITE

BIOL 211 highly recommended; or a college- or high school-level general biology course within five years, or permission of instructor.

CREDIT AND HOURS

5 credit hours: 4 one-hour lectures and 1 two-hour lab per week.

TEXTBOOKS

Plant Biology, 2nd edition,  Rost, Barbour, Stocking, Murphy, 2006.

Biology of Plants: Laboratory Exercises, 6th  edition,  Dean & Schuhmacher

Lab Notebook, colored pencils

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures, discussions, reading, term paper, quizzes, assignments, and exams.

Labs will give students hands-on experience.

OBJECTIVES

To provide the student with:

1.   An introductory botany course for horticulture and science oriented students,

which also meets a natural science distribution requirement for the AAS degree.

2.   A sequential biology course which extends the molecular and cellular

principles of BIOL 211 to the organism and population levels (plants).

3.   Part of the one year biology sequence (BIOL 211, 212, 213) for science students

transferring to a baccalaureate institution (Freshman Year General Biology).

4.   A sound understanding of plant structure and function.

5.   An introduction to evolutionary processes and trends in plants.

6.   Reading and writing skills in botany.

7.   Lab skills in microscope use and plant molecular biology.

EVALUATION

      Evaluation will be based on:

            Lecture exams (4 X 100 pts.)...........................................................400 pts.

            Term paper…………………...............................................…........100 pts.

            Quizzes and assignments....................................................................100 pts.

            Lab Notebook…………………………………...….......………....50 pts.

            Attendance, Effort, Attitude, Improvement.........................................50 pts.

            Lab report………………………………..………...……...………100 pts.

            Lab exam (practicle) ……...........................................................…..100 pts.

                                                                                                                     900 pts.

Grades are then given according to the following scale:

            93-100=A        88-89=B+        78-79=C+        68-69=D+       <60=F

            90-92=A-        83-87=B          73-77=C          63-67=D

                                    80-82=B-         70-72=C-         60-62=D-

ATTENDANCE AND CLASS POLICIES

Regular attendance in lecture and lab is necessary to accomplish the objectives of this

course.  Quizzes or assignments can be given at any time.  In-class assignments can not be made up.  Students must exhibit consistent effort, improvement, positive attitudes, and good attendance to succeed.

Cheating or plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 for that assignment.  A 10% penalty will

be assessed for every day an assignment is late.  The instructor has the right to change

anything in this syllabus at any time (with notice given in class).

Missed exams, assignments, quizzes can not  be made-up unless the instructor is

notified before  the event and a valid reason is given (e.g. death in the immediate family).

In the case of medical emergencies, auto breakdowns, or other such circumstances, leave a

message explaining the situation as soon as possible; five days will then be allowed for

make-up.

We are all here to learn and that is difficult if anyone in the class is carrying-on some

other activity (e.g. talking, texting) while the class is in session. It is expected that you will be

listening (or at least allowing others to do so) during lectures.  You may be required to leave class and you will

lose points if you conduct behavior that is distracting.
